8: Meet Mary-Clare, a Consultant Plastic Surgeon

Updated: Jan 16

I have known Mary-Clare for many years, since she and her husband, Tom, moved to the same area as me, and their son, Luke, joined my son, Wesson's class. They boys have been good buddies ever since and I've had the privilege of spending a lot of time with Mary-Clare (often on rugby, hockey or cricket sidelines). I've watched her juggle her immense career alongside motherhood and more recently a (very) less than smooth house-renovation.

She's got a great husband in Tom, but there's no questioning that Mary-Clare is hard-working woman's-woman and therefore an inspiration. To me anyway.

Before we sat down chatting I knew what she did for work and where she was from (and that she's amazing at pub quizzes), but I didn't know much about her family or her wider approach/thoughts on her career, so it was a joy to get the full low-down on these.

As as you've hopefully heard in the chat, she's a plastic surgeon. But not a boobs and bum dollar-dollar-bills y'all plastic surgeon, she's an NHS plastic surgeon that focusses on hands (but does other work, of course - it's the NHS!), and in particular tiny people's hands. So if your child is born with a physical birth defect, Mary-Clare can help.

She's not motivated by money and her all round positive attitude is awe-inspiring. Mary-Clare will have seen some pretty sad things over the course of her career, but her optimism for life and for people is contagious.

I really like Mary-Clare, can you tell?

Enjoy.
