47: Meet Charlie: A highly experienced Midwife and Multi-Department Head

Updated: Jul 5

I'VE FINALLY PODDED A MIDWIFE!!!!

And I'm really excited about that, because it is the job that has been requested of TWW the most. So many of you, particularly in your early to mid 40s, are considering training to be one, but aren't sure if it's right; so I hope this chat goes someway to help.

Charlie is great. Not only is she super proud to be a midwife and to work in the NHS, but she's also progressed through the ranks and is therefore able to chat to us from a more holistic perspective about the role, the departments, and to some extent, the pros and cons of the NHS in general.

... She's also MASSIVELY solutions-focussed and does the job - and has progressed to the level she has - primarily to help the many, not just the few. To make real change(s) that can have a bigger overall effect. And even though I say this as a joke in the chat, I can't help thinking that there's something in my comment about letting NHS staff run the country. Their values of teamwork and collaboration alongside their innate calling to help others is surely what (global) governments need?!

I know there will be some of you that think NHS management are more mis-management than 'effective' management, however, when you look at the other side of the coin, and you chat to senior NHS staff, like Charlie (as I have been fortunate to do), you realise that what they accomplish, even sometimes as haphazard as it may seem, is phenomenal given the tremendous lack of funding and support. Let alone alongside ever growing patient needs and expectations. As Charlie touches on in the chat, her team are often performing miracles and conjuring something from almost nothing amid real adversity.

... And they don't do it for the money... Nobody would do a job like this for the money... They do it for the calling inside them, that asks them to help other humans. To heal and protect others.

I for one am so incredibly grateful that the Charlie's of this world, and the teams around them, exist and do what they do; and we should NEVER, ever take that for granted.

Enjoy.

Chops x
